Core topics

The course contents are split into five main areas. We help you to become an expert in sustainable management.

The economy and society

Businesses play an important role in society and should be viewed as an integral part of it.

With this in mind, this subject area focuses on selected topics and issues: what ethical questions will you face when environmental, business and social considerations intersect? And what social, economic and political frameworks are in place?

You will also learn about the history of sustainable development and the concepts behind it, as well as carrying out a detailed examination of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Management systems and standards

A core question is how you can implement sustainable business practices at your company.

This subject area introduces you to all of the management systems and standards you will need for your day-to-day responsibilities as an environmental and sustainability manager.

Communication and reporting

Is sustainable management already an important principle at your company? If so, you need to communicate this to your stakeholders.

These courses show you how to manage internal communications effectively, and focus primarily on communications related to interactions with external stakeholders. There is also a detailed analysis of public relations (PR), stakeholder management and clear reporting.

Ecological and technological principles

This core subject looks at the fundamentals of ecology and technology. Courses provide basic knowledge of the ecosystem in which society and businesses operate.

You will also gain an insight into basic principles of the technologies employed in selected fields, with a focus on renewable energy and waste management.

Research methods and academic techniques

The master thesis and master examination form the centrepiece of this core area, alongside a range of research-related courses.

The thesis gives you an opportunity to contribute to the current debate in the environment and sustainability sector and develop new solutions that promote sustainable business. You can shape this budding discipline while also generating added value for the project client.

Career options for graduates

As a graduate of the Environmental and Sustainability Management master programme, you will understand and practise the concepts behind sustainability. You will be able to use resources carefully, as well as draw up plans and take action with your internal and external responsibilities in mind.

You will be able to make use of your expertise in the public, private or non-profit sectors. Potential employers include CSR and sustainability agencies, NGOs, environmental and energy management companies or businesses with in-house CSR or sustainability departments.

In your day-to-day work, you will build on your specialist knowledge of ecology and environmental management, as well as methods-based skills to independently devise solutions in multidisciplinary contexts.
