Advanced Nursing Practice master degree programme

Primary nursing: our two-year, part-time Advanced Nursing Practice (ANP) master programme will prepare you to assume advanced-level responsibilities in the healthcare sector.

We train the nursing experts of tomorrow. We give you the tools you need to respond to the continually changing opportunities and challenges in nursing and play a part in developing new nursing and healthcare provision concepts.

The degree programme

Do you want to rise to the challenges facing healthcare, such as the increase in chronic conditions and multiple morbidities, the growing financial pressure on hospitals, nursing services and medical practices, and advancing digitalisation?

Would you relish the chance to take on tasks such as evaluating current work processes and duty allocation, maximising process optimisation and gains in effectiveness and efficiency, or developing interdepartmental management processes?

Then this is the ideal programme for you. You will learn how to carry out managerial tasks while maintaining a focus on continually improving the efficiency and quality of care.

The curriculum places a strong emphasis on primary care for the general public. Primary care facilities will be one of the topics you explore, as these new health centres are performing an important role in health promotion and prevention – including in high-tech settings.

This is a part-time programme, with lectures usually taking place on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, but only every two or three weeks. This leaves you with free weekends between your days at university. Your timetable will include one block week per semester.

" Since our students explore the roles, concepts and models of advanced nursing practice in such great depth, it is the students themselves who will shape ANP in Austria. The practice-based project and master theses will support developments in the field. "

Programme director Adelheid Schönthaler

Core topics

The curriculum is divided into three main areas.

Nursing practice and leadership

What are the characteristics of advanced-level nursing practice? What models and role allocation options are there? What opportunities are opening up in primary care? In these courses you will broaden your knowledge of current trends in the field.

You will also study leadership and motivation, learning how to manage teams effectively and efficiently, and studying the aspects of communication you need to take into consideration when working in a team, giving advice or dealing with conflict situations.

In addition, you will explore the role of nursing as well as the possibility of extending and enhancing the part it plays. In short: how to drive forward development in the nursing professions, and ways of embedding research findings in practice.

Specialist clinical practice

Why is standardised terminology so important in nursing? And how can this help to clearly outline the efficiency and effectiveness of services? What IT tools are used to process nursing data and information? Discover the answers in these courses.

You will also learn about clinical assessment standards in nursing and how they contribute to improving the quality of interventions.

The topic of digitalisation also features on the curriculum, and you will look at ways of embedding e-health technologies. In nursing, these include ambient assisted living, an innovative support system suitable for senior citizens.

Research and research-based nursing practice

What frameworks and trends play a part in applied research? Why is applied research so important in nursing? Find out in these courses.

You will develop your skills in the fields of scientific theory, clinical research and related legal requirements, as well as research ethics, and look at international research trends and the application of a range of research methods.

You will also learn about the benefits of evidence-based nursing – the objective evaluation of nursing activities using academically researched criteria – and how to implement this approach in clinical practice.

On the research courses you will be studying alongside students from the Applied Health Sciences master programme. This gives you the valuable experience of cooperating on interdisciplinary research before you have even graduated.

Career paths for graduates of the Advanced Nursing Practice master programme

In line with the concept of primary nursing, after completing this degree you will be able to exercise professional autonomy when caring for patients. You will be able to care for specific patient groups with complex needs, or develop clinical guidelines and standards through your research.

By completing the supplementary Nursing Management module, you will be qualified to assume junior, middle and senior intramural management responsibilities as a nurse managerin accordance with section 26 of the Gesundheits- und Krankenpflegegesetz (Austrian Healthcare and Nursing Act).

  • In your respective field, you will be able to
  • provide expert care for specific patient groups with complex needs
  • advise patients and families on the practical application of new techniques and methods using an evidence-based approach, and advise nursing professionals working in your specialist area
  • serve as a tutor for colleagues
  • show leadership by contributing your visions and integrating current trends into the discourse, initiating developments and heading up steering and project groups
  • represent the interests of members of your profession at an institutional and political level and promote top-quality, needs-based care for all patients
  • independently develop clinical guidelines and standards in your field as a researcher, take part in large-scale research projects, and on a smaller scale, independently evaluate the effectiveness of concepts and carry out evaluation research
