Medical and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology

The Bachelor programme in Medical and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology provides a strong international focus on research, production, marketing and quality management for medicines and organ replacements.

We are an interdisciplinary team of professors and lecturers from a variety of national backgrounds with experience in higher education, research and industry. Using innovative teaching methods and working closely with leading representatives from science and industry, our mission is to prepare our students for successful professional careers.

Medical biotechnology

The goal of medical biotechnology is the replacement of damaged cells or organs, not with transplants or artificial systems like dialysis, but with the body’s own naturally grown cells.

Today, burns patients have their own skin cells bred up in the laboratory and then transplanted onto the wounds. In the case of damaged cartilage, the patient contributes cartilage cells which are multiplied in the laboratory to create cartilage tissue and then implanted in the patient again. Extracorporeal systems are used to cleanse the blood of poisons, thus replacing the liver, or to remove autoantibodies from the blood in the case of autoimmune diseases.

Pharmaceutical biotechnology

Traditional biotech products used in pharmacy are antibiotics, which are produced by microorganisms in large fermenters. Methods from molecular biology can also be used to produce proteins such as insulin, specific antibodies or novel vaccines.
