The bachelor’s programme „Midwifery“ offers an academic training in midwifery in Austria for the first time.
The professional and interdisciplinary as well as academic qualifications in combination with practical training focus on complex scenarios of the specific areas of work of midwives.
In order to meet the increasing challenges in the organisational and societal scope of duties of midwives, additional issues such as women/family health as well as self-employment are dealt with in the 5th and 6th semester of the programme.
The graduates are entitled to follow their profession in Austria as well as in all the other countries of the EU. They possess all the necessary professional qualifications required by the outline of midwifery according to the respective bill.
Professional Competence
Professional know-how and skills to cope with technical tasks in an autonomous and process–oriented way.
Social-communicative and individual competences:
Professionally relevant personal features and skills for the use in nursing relations
Academic competences:
Investigative questionings and independent evaluation of sophisticated practical cases, implementing proof-ridden action in professional contexts.
With the supplementary training in English for specific purposes the graduates acquire the necessary tools for international employment.
Job and Career Prospects
The graduation of this programme entitles the graduates to become employed in various sectors of the health system.
Fields of employment in public and private institutions (hospitals, women’s ward) such as:
- Pregnancy check-up and antepartum area
- Birth and postpartum area
- Cooperation with specialists in obstetrics
- Specific midwifery care offerings, e.g. consultation hours
- Organisation and execution of training courses e.g. preparatory course for birth, parental consultation
- Collaboration in the context of quality assurance
- Senior position and mentoring
- Teaching
Main focus
One important goal of the programme is to convey a scientifically profound education with a strong practical component with the professional core competences of midwifery at its centre. The graduates will be particularly trained for individual and holistically oriented consultation and care of women/mothers/children/parents. The autonomy and human dignity of the woman and her family are at the centre of attention.
